Son of a Gun- Take (EP)

10213_584777478272115_1227891400_nSon of a Gun was started as a solo project a ways back by a dude named Garrett from Chicago, Illinois as an outlet for putting out some fun, raucous, lo-fi garage-punk tunes. Since then, the project has grown into a 4-piece, and these dudes have teamed up to release a new EP Cassette via Why Pick On Me (which is interesting in that Why Pick On Me is a super rad music blog that now appears to be putting out tapes).

At five short tracks, the energy from all of the past Son of a Gun releases is certainly there and amplified right off the bat with the curt and dern catchy “Take”– a speedy little bugger clocking in at just over a minute while still packing a hell of a punch. Of particular note, and it is certainly comes through a bit clearer in the last two songs, “Wrong Things” and “Turned the Lights On”, the acoustic rhythm guitar mixed into the equation is a really nice touch that elicits a slight feel to John Dwyer’s occasional knack for tossing an acoustic guitar into the recordings of some of Thee Oh Sees tracks.  In any case, there is certainly a lot of attitude, twang, and moxy captured in these tracks.
